Travel Guide: Cabo - Riu Adults Only Resort

entre personal travel May 10, 2023

The past few months have been wild, and magic - in the BEST kind of ways. Doing the thing called ‘balance’ of mama-hood, business, managing clients and managing a team - it’s been so jam packed but also worth every minute.

In between the work, activities and doing projects on the land Neil and I snuck away for some disconnected time, we packed our bags to venture to Cabo, Mexico!  We always enjoy the ease of all-inclusives and our travel agent April is the bees knees when it comes to finding us a place. After hanging out with the kids 24/7 in a tiny house – the escape and space is welcome, if you know…you know!

Leaving the kids behind

As a busy mom and business owner, finding time for yourself, let alone for your partner, can seem nearly impossible. It’s like planning a date night ends up on a to do list..instead of a “i desire list”. With the never-ending demands of work and motherhood, it's easy to get caught up in the day-to-day hustle and forget about prioritizing your own joy. But what I've learned since moving to Golden, BC and downsizing to a tiny home is that if you don't prioritize joy, everything else seems to fall apart.

That's why I made it a priority to take getaways with my partner, Neil, and step away from work, and actually relax for a bit.  And by giving myself the time away - I can be creative, relax, and  I'm better able to show up for my clients and team members when I get back to tiny home living.

During our getaways Neil and I enjoy meals without interruptions, slowly chew our food & taste it - haha, and just be present with each other. It's a chance for us to connect, recharge, and come back to our daily lives a little bit more focused.

If you're feeling overwhelmed and burnt out, I really do recommend some time away, even if its to a local airbnb, and set your phone on AIRPLANE mode for a few hours (if not more!) for the time. After doing this thing called business for a few years, I’ve realized - my family AND clients thank me for it.

Getting away also helps me realize and remember WHO I AM and why I’m doing what I am doing: for freedom and impact. I want to show other women that they can be FREE.

Free to choose getaways, free to choose to make more money, free to choose to stay home with the kids or to work away from home. That’s a large part of why I have the agency.

The Riu Adults only in Cabo

So where did we jet off to? A quick 3 hour airplane ride to Cabo and stayed at the Riu Adults only. And I made a quick list of why we loved it!

- The infinity pool was amazing and provided a stunning view of the ocean. It was HUGE and never felt crowed even though it was a busy time of year - spring break!

- The entertainment in the evenings was a blast and kept us entertained throughout our stay. The variety was on-point, whoever coordinates it should be proud. From karaoke to a jazz band - every night was different. We didn't go to any of the 'parties' (Pink Party, White Party) but we did enjoy sitting around watching the more calm entertainment. (Aka call us old but we were in bed by 930 every night)

- The close trip from Calgary. Cabo is a 3-4 hour flight for us, and that feels so great. No layovers, no long flights is a win!

- The staff at the resort were incredibly friendly and provided top-notch customer service, from checkin and upgrading our rooms to the restaurants, everyone was so kind!

- Upgrading to an ocean view room was worth it - we loved sitting on the oversized balcony and watching the whales and cruise ships go by. We highly recommend if you can - upgrade! It completely changed our entire trip. We were able to sit on the patio and watch the whales and cruise ships coming in and out. Our first room - had a view of other rooms.

- The resort was adult-only, which made for a more relaxing and peaceful atmosphere overall. When we’re traveling without the kids - it’s necessary, it’s one of our ‘non-negotiables’ for resorts!

- The resort was situated on a beautiful beach with soft sand and crystal-clear water. Although not swimmable - it was nice to dip our toes in.  The ocean is ALWAYS amazing to see, hear and smell.

Tiny home + Minimalist Packing Must Haves

As many of you know - we live in a tiny home, which means our closets are probably the size of your medicine cabinet (haha) so we don’t have a lot of ‘stuff’ I have a bin of summer clothing in our shed, and so does Neil. And when packing for trips it now takes us no time because it’s a grab and go type of system. I think its fun to show you what I pack and how easy it can be!

  1. Yetis - we use these from the airplane ride to daily at the pool, we can put our margaritas in it and they stay cold all day!
  2. Loon and bloom dress - I wore this on my travel day there…and travel day back. And I can’t lie - I wore it out to dinner one day too. So it got lot of wear. It’s so soft, so comfy and looks amazing while travelling!
  3. Jean Jacket - Cabo has cooler evenings, and I have my fave denim jacket from Gap that I got years ago - its a staple!
  4. Birkenstocks - although not fancy - they were the shoes I wore to travel, I have a black pair, and a leather pair.
  5. Backpack from Signature Clothing - I used this bag on the airplane, at the pool, on our day trip to Cabo and it’s the best. SIgnature Clothing is in Golden and when I went in to shop - she showed me this bag and its been a favorite of mine since our trip to Mexico in January!
  6. 1 pair of shorts, 2 sun dresses, a long cardigan, a pool cover and a fedora, and panties, beigh bra, black bra and 2 swim suits (haha)

That’s it! That was my suitcase, I love traveling light, I also bring the ‘to go’ laundry soaps - so I can wash something if I spill coffee or wine (truth!).

Room Upgrade and vibes:

I’m not sure about all of you, but when we travel we want a view, we want to SEE the ocean, hear it and soak it in. When we first arrived - our room was facing the other hotel - but with ease (again awesome customer service!) we were able to upgrade our room on day 2 – to an ocean front suite. It was MAGICAL, 10/10 recommend doing this if you can.

Upgrading our room - shifted our entire experience at the resort - we were able to sip coffee and whale watch, watch the sunset while the cruise ships settled in, and had a view of the main infinity pool too.  This picturesque view undoubtedly made our stay at the RIU Cabo all the more enjoyable and memorable.

Ultimately, the decision to stay at the RIU Cabo adults-only resort comes down to what you're looking for in a vacation experience. Neil and I love quiet environments and smaller hotels, so we probably should’ve asked prior if this was a huge hotel or not. Because it is MASSIVE.

If you prioritize entertainment and convenience, and don't mind a bit of a party atmosphere, then this resort would be great for you. If you're looking for a more serene and food-focused experience, you may want to explore other options  we were at a beautiful boutique resort last year The Catalonia.

Regardless of your preference, the RIU Cabo adults-only resort is definitely worth considering for your next vacation.

I’m thankful for our time away and would love to hear how you take ‘breaks’ from work. There ya go peeps - a little insight into what happens when I'm not busy marketing, and mommying. Take BREAKS...honour what you WANT, and don't judge or think twice when you feel you need a break from those kids. After all - it benefits all of us when YOU show up more relaxed and have your cup filled.
